This is a letter I wrote to the Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper. I'm reprinting it here. As an eleven or twelve year resident and renter in Santa Fe, I wholeheartedly agree that finding rentals that are *affordable* AND well maintained is difficult. Thankfully, my partner and I are not among the number of renters who have been ill-housed or ill treated. Our landlord and landlady, who own and run Mares Realty, have been outstanding! A lot of work was deferred for a while, but now, is being done. It seems every week that new upgrades are being finished here in the complex where we live. The Mareses are attentive, quick to repair problems and easy to get hold of in an emergency. Why? Because they are, and have been PART OF the Santa Fe community since their childhood! Raised in Santa Fe, with deep family roots and connections, both Richard E. Mares and his wife Cindy Mares are INVESTED in Santa Fe's success and rental market. Their daughters also are now managing properties here. I believe that THIS is the key to good rental management. Locally owned, locally run properties with people who care for the community of which they are a vital and functioning part. Our building is safe, well maintained, reasonably priced and comfortable. We do not HAVE to mail rent checks to New York or send them to a faceless corporation. The Mareses are what is *right* with Santa Fe! S. Stevens and K. Winter.
